Annual Al Korn Pool Tournament Brings Friends Together To Raise $30,000 For Charities

Freeport, Illinois — The day was all about remembering a man who loved to play pool, Al Korn of Freeport. Al died in August 2000, and for the 16th year his friends and family have honored him by hosting the Al Korn Pool Tournament at Logan’s Bar & Grill.

Mike Brubaker, alongside Al Korn’s sister, Deb Molln welcomed people to the Saturday event, which brought 55 pool players from various parts of the Midwest to honor Korn.

“Since this all began 16 years ago, we have raised more than $30,000 for charities,” said Brubaker, the event organizer.

“It’s a nice way to keep Al’s memory alive and help others. We couldn’t do this without the help of Logans, area businesses and friends in the community.”

Players competed in a double-elimination, 8-ball tournament. While each player receives prize money, fundraiser money was generated through raffles and donations.  The charity receiving the donation this year will be St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Molln said the event is always emotional for her and her family.

“Pool was a big part of my brother’s life growing up and anyone that knew him would agree he would have loved this kind of day”

“He was a great guy, and we honor him today with this tournament”
