FREEPORT, ILLINOIS — July is Park and Recreation Month as part of a program launched by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) to raise awareness of the vital impact that parks, recreation and conservation has in local communities. Freeport Park District is a long-term member of NRPA and during July will be hosting a variety of special events.
After renovations to the carousel structure and the plaza surrounding it, the Krape Park Carousel opened for its 60th season. On July 4, 1959 it was installed in Krape Park. Now, 60 years later it remains a community icon.
On July 4th from noon-2:00 pm the Freeport Park District will be joined by co-sponsor FHN hosting the Carousel 60th Celebration at Krape Park. In addition to 50 cents carousel rides there will be face painting, bouncy house and balloon creations. The first 100 children riders will receive a fun prize.
Now in its 100th season, Music Under the Stars presented by the Freeport Concert Band begins at 7:30 pm every Sunday throughout July at the Koenig Amphitheater. Admission is free.
The Family Overnight Campout will be held on July 12-13 with games, adventures and overnight tent camping in Oakdale Nature Preserve Park. Participants should bring their own tent and sleeping bags. Groups, families and individuals are invited. Youth under 18 yrs. must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Check-in begins at 5:00 pm on Friday, July 12th and all sites must be vacated by 9:00 am on Saturday, July 13th. Pre-registration is required by July 3rd. Sites fees are $25 for residents/$30 for non-residents.
Music on the Patio summer performances continue at Park Hills Golf Course. On Friday, July 19th from 5-8 pm Park Hills will feature live music from Mr. Ed. All ages including children are welcome to attend. Admission is free and attendees are encouraged to bring along lawn chairs.
