Freeport Native Annette Sonntag Presented Golden Apple Award For Excellence In Teaching

Columbus, Ohio — It doesn’t take much looking around to find cool Freeport born folks out in the world doing great things. We all know the famous Freeport names our city gets associated but there are plenty of not so famous names who frankly, do as much good if not more, than all those other famous people.

Annette Sonntag been serving as both principal and teacher at St. John’s Lutheran School in Columbus, Nebraska for the past 13 years. Justin Bieber probably doesn’t know her name.

But her students over the past four decades do, and the teachers who have worked around Annette sure know her name also.

According to KOLN-TV Mrs. Sonntag has decided to retire at the end of this school year and Janet Janssen, who works in the school office, decided that this would be a great time to honor her co-worker.

Annette was born and raised in Freeport, Illinois and comes from a long line of Lutheran educators, “My grandpa was Lutheran pastor and my great grandpa was a Lutheran school teacher in st. Louis,” she told KOLN-TV.

According to the article Annette has taught everything from math to music over her 40 year career, but says for her, the most important thing she’s taught her students along the way, is how to care for one another and how to live lives that make a difference.

Why it isn’t people like Annette who aren’t the famous ones of our world, we’ll never understand.
