Founder of Edwards Apple Orchard, Robert “Bob” M Edwards Dies At 90

POPLAR GROVE, ILLINOIS — Born October 4, 1928 in a farmhouse in Canby, MN Robert “Bob” M Edwards of Poplar Grove, IL leaves behind quite a legacy in his 90 years of living. Robert “Bob” M Edwards of Poplar Grove, IL passed away at a youthful 90 years old on January 21, 2019.

Graduating from Harlem High School and receiving a Bachelor and Master of Science Degree from University of Illinois, Bob there met his wife of 61 years, Betty, while washing dishes at her sorority. They were married June 8, 1952. Bob then served as a second lieutenant and instructor in the United States Air Force.

After the service, Bob was an Ag teacher in Waterman, IL and later taught science in Rockford, IL. He often spoke fondly of his students and time as a teacher. As Manager of the National Peach Council, Bob visited orchards all over the country. He and Betty decided they would love to plant their own orchard and raise their children in the country. They purchased his folks’ dairy farm in Poplar Grove, IL and planted the first trees that would become known as Edwards Apple Orchard. They hoped guests would visit their farm and enjoy celebrating fall with their families. Bob founded Edwards Apple Orchard in Poplar Grove, IL in 1964 and assisted in opening their location in 1990.

His obituary speaks of how Bob loved his community. How he was willing to help wherever needed. Some of the organizations he was passionate about included Poplar Grove Lions, Boone County Historical Society, Sister Cities of Belvidere, Poplar Grove United Methodist Church, Rock Valley College, Illinois Horticulture Society, International Fruit Tree Association, Harlem Alums and his beloved card groups.

His life was celebrated with a visitation from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, January 25, 2019 at Poplar Grove United Methodist Church, 105 E. Grove St., Poplar Grove. Funeral service was 11:00 am Saturday, January 26, 2019 at Poplar Grove United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the North Boone Education Foundation to establish a scholarship in Bob’s name. Contributions may also be given to the Poplar Grove United Methodist Church. To light a candle or share a condolence please visit www.AndersonFCS.com.

Today marks the end of a remarkable week of a community coming together for Miss Carly! The donut machine was started in the early morning of Friday April 17th to ensure we could sell as many donuts as possible. The Edwards family and their volunteers worked non-stop until sundown and are saddened that we could not serve everyone that wanted to support the cause. A big thank you to the Winnebago Sherrifs Department for their task of directing the unexpected lines. We sold 1,815 dozen of donuts and Miss Carly’s donation bucket added another $3,402. Because of your generous outpouring of support, we were able to present Miss Carly with a check for $21, 552!

This past Thursday, we also made donuts and delivered 240 dozen to the Winnebago County hospitals for ALL the healthcare workers. We want to thank all of our frontline workers for their continued work during this difficult time. (This included Nurses, Doctors, Phlebotomist, Suppliers, Respiratory Therapists, Case Managers, Food Service, Pharmacy, Therapy, Environmental Services, and Radiology.)

Please visit MissCarlys.org to donate or volunteer and continue to support this wonderful organization for years to come.

No one will EVER forget the time of Corona and your outpouring of support. Truly a wonderful gift at a desperate time.

How cool is it that you sold 1,815 and we are the (1)815 community! Way to go 815!

So glad I was able to partake!! Edwards West you will always have my heart! A huge shoutout to every single one of your staff that came in and spent their time helping to raise money for Miss Carly! You should be so freaking proud of yourselves for what you accomplished in 1 day!! ❤❤❤

That is Awesome Lynn!! Carpenter's Place is another very worthy homeless shelter!! I know Michael wishes he was a hospitalist in the area!!! BRAVO for all you do!!!👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Thank you so much to everyone at Edwards and to all those who waited a very long time for the donuts!! As someone who spends much of my free time volunteering at Carly’s, I know firsthand, the money will be used to do great things! ❤️

Thank you for donating to the hospital! The donuts were delicious! And warm!!

That’s amazing!!!!! Amazing job by an amazing family !!!!

Just a thought. Summerfield zoo in Belvedere could use your fundraising ability. It's a wonderful little zoo that brought so much joy to many families. Rescue animals are taken in. They do a lot of teaching too. They were hit with a tornado 5 years ago and with help, they rebuilt. They are having extreme difficulty surviving this shut down. They are in great need of animal food and donations to stay in business. Please research this little zoo. They have done great things for the community. We can't forget helping the animals too. Thank you for all your help for Miss Carly's. Edit: Does anyone have any ideas to help?

Thank you so much for what you did bringing happiness to the community and your incredibly generous donation to Miss Carly! I was bummed when I had to work Friday and miss the donuts but imagine my surprise when I came in to the hospital to donuts on our break room table!!!! You guys really thought of everything! Thank you for being awesome! 💙💙💙

So awesome! Thank you for giving to the hospitals also, It was a very special treat! But so awesome for Miss Carly’s!

Congratulations on a hugely successful fundraiser for Miss Carly’s! I was working on Friday, but I’m a nurse and was able to enjoy a donut that you delivered to Mercyhealth on Thursday ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️Thank you!!!

That's so amazing! Your generosity will be remembered when all of this blows over

Thank you for treating us to donuts and supporting this wonderful cause in this amazing way. ❤️

Such a beautiful thing all the way around and back. Thank you for being the change we all wish to see

Waited in line 5 hours and 45 minutes but was definitely worth it loved every bite!❤🍎🍩🎉Awesome job Edwards Apple Orchard!

We really appreciated receiving the donuts in the hospital lab - thank you Edward’s Apple Orchard 🍩 😋

I'm saddened I didn't get to partake in this. I attempted to but with 2 kids in the car sitting on meridian for an hour only going 2 miles was a little much for them. I will be there in fall for my donuts and I'll donate another way to ms. Carlys. ♡♡♡ Shout out TO ROCKFORD and the Surround communities that not only came together for some yummy donuts but also to donate to an amazing non profit organization.

That is awesome ty for doing this. We enjoyed our dozen and hope you can do something like this again.

Thank you! It was an amazing sight to see and be a part of buying donuts!! Great job!

Your family went above and beyond with unconditional love. So emotional knowing how all this will come together to benefit so many. Yes, almost 5 hours to see your beautiful faces😷🤗❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I had several friends not want to wait in line and instead went directly to Miss Carleys to donate directly! Love the thought and bringing some awareness to her wonderful organization along with donations! Thank you Mike & Lynn Edwards and the rest of your family that pitched in on set-up, making & baking, bagging, and bringing joy to a lot of families in our community! You guys ROCK!!🥰🥰🥰

We weren't able to get donuts today to support Miss Carly's due to the line length. But, we are so proud to be a part of a community that cares for those who desperately need it. Miss Carly's does amazing work daily without hesitation. Thank you for giving the rest of us the opportunity to show our support for them!

That was an awesome... wonderful and caring thing you did today.... which is why I always knew you guys were awesome... caring and wonderful

You. Are. Amazing. Thank you from the bottom Of our hearts.

Thank You for being a big part of that!!! I was thrilled to get a dozen to share with loved ones!

How about repeating it again and soon! Obviously our community would whole heartedly support it. Take advantage and give further to Miss Carlys.

Thank you very much for this piece of cheer in a very dark time. 💖🍩 Happier still that some money is going to a great cause.

Thank you. I didn’t get in the donut line but you inspired me to donate. See you in the fall.

It means so much that you would partner with her to help those who cant help themselves right now. But she gives them love, hope and believe that they can be better but to be able to help others!!! 💜💜💜

Will you be doing this tomorrow as well?

Thank you thank you. My parents waited in line this morning so they could ship a dozen donuts to Minnesota for me!!! Edwards for life no matter where I live. Love you guys!!!

We came and waited in line for 2 hours. Would gladly do it again! Especially for such a good cause! Thank you for doing this!

Please do this again. We weren't able to get doughnuts due to the line. I love this was for a great charity!

My son thanks you by rubbing the sugar from his donut on his feet. No respect this kid. But he did wait 5 1/2 hrs with me.

Please please do some more. I don’t even care if it’s for profit. This community needs some cheering up. That response was crazy. We need donuts. 😂🤣

Great idea Mike and Lynn. Thanks for sharing with the community!

Thank you!! I didn't make it before the cut off but enjoyed the drive out and seeing all the cars in person 💗💗

How many cars? Donuts were delicious. Thank you for doing this fund raiser.

Will u do it again? Obviously if u do it..people will come & I didnt get any this time because I came at 3:30

I think this was such a awesome event we should do round 2! You pick the organization and we get another shot at the donuts!! What do you say?!

Don’t be sad about anything!!!! You did a great thing

Maybe Do it again once a week for different charities around the area

I waited in line and sold out way before I could get there. To see the outpouring of lines of cars in every direction, left me in awe.

Curiosity for those of us who supported, how many vehicles and how much in donations did you all reach?

Wow!! Thank you so much to everyone that came out to get donuts and support Miss Carly’s! As of 2:30 we are having to make the decision to shut down the line to ensure everyone currently in line will get their donuts by 4pm. Thank you for supporting this great organization! ❤️ ... In line since 11:45 am what a great experience! Thanks to the Edwards family, gave me a great idea for Hoffman house doing our fried bread with honey butter on Wednesday April 29

Hey Edwards Apple Orchard West did you hear Miss Carly’s is responsible for turning in the two escapees from prison up North!? They showed up there today and she was able to keep them there unalarmed until the Cops showed up! Thank you for all your hard work today!

Wasn’t going to brace that madness even though some cider apple donuts sound great. Going to just make a donation anyway to Mrs Carlys. Great idea and thanks for supporting a great cause.

I'm so thrilled you did this for Miss Carly!!! She is doing what others fear to do! I had to get out of line unfortunately but thank you for making it better for those she will help!!

Got in line coming g down the hill on Meridian at 11:30. Made it onto Cemetary Rd at 1:00 and never even made it to Harrison road by 3:30. Then they closed off and said you were done! It was a fun adventure but I was really really looking forward some donuts! This fall will be extra special then! Thank you for doing this.

Thank you for putting on this event! I attempted to wait in line, but the turn out was HUGE and did not think there would be any donuts left even if I waited. I’ll donate to Miss Carly’s anyway as it’s still a good cause. To those mad/frustrated for waiting in lines for hours and not able to get donuts, I hope you know Edwards did their best for a good cause. The donut supply was not endless and despite how they prepared, the turnout was MASSIVE. They were bound to run out and cause huge lines. Instead of posting rude messages, maybe try to help brainstorm ways to make events like this flow better in the future. By posting discouraging or rude messages, you dissuade Edwards from creating events like this in the future. We are all frustrated enough during this time. Let’s give Edwards a round of applause for doing something great for the community.

Excellent job!! Got in line at 8:30 and only took a little over an hour! Very organized Thank you! Totally worth it

It was wonderful thing you did for Miss Carly. We had to get out of line, but it was worth the wait just seeing all of the cars. I’m sure you were truly amazed at the turnout. Good for you for making this happen😢

While waiting in line, I read about Miss Carly’s experience face-to-face with escaped convicts from Wisconsin! Wow, such courage and intelligence! So glad I waited for donuts to help this facility!

Thanks for doing this! The donuts were amazing as usual. The lady handing them out was so personable! You guys rock!

Got our donuts in a little over an hour. Came from the west. They are are awesome as usual! If you do it again maybe think about traffic flow coming from the east.

Unfortunately we weren’t able to get some of those amazing donuts. Just wanted to say thanks for all the work your team did today for a great cause. Was a pretty amazing site to see all the folks who wanted to get a dozen. We will see you soon to get ours!

Can I assume that this was the first time Edwards gas done this for a fund raiser for a local charity? If so, NO ONE could have judged what the turnout would be. Hats off to you and your family Lynn for doing this for the community. 💜💜💜💜

Lynn...... did anyone in area get a drone pic of the traffic in the area? The standing traffic. Lol. Sorry. I made u turn on Latham that was backed up to merge with backed up Meridian. Lol I ran my donation down to Miss Carly's after work. Thanx for drawing attention to her and all their good deeds.

Sadly, we drove an hour and 15 min to get donuts and support Miss Carly’s, and we had to drive back home empty handed....... Fall is going to feel even further away now.

Would love to see this happen again on a weekend day so the many of us working during the week have a chance at that deliciousness.

Just an idea, maybe make it more than one day? Everyone has been couped up and at the mere thought of being able to get out, let alone get those donuts, is going to cause craziness.

Thank you for taking care of those of us we who have been in line for hours. Much appreciated.

We were trying to come out but we are essential workers and didn't get out until 230 by time we got to Edward's Apple Orchard they weren't taking anymore people, kind of sucks that we couldn't get in.

Wishing you have this run another day also - some areas were not handled & people were not allowed to enter the line waiting because they couldn’t pull out!! 😢😢

Seeing everyone else's times are crazy. We came from the east headed west on Cemetery road got there at 9:30 and had donuts at 10:50.

Is it possible that you might be doing this for another day I was in that line today around 11:30 and a guy misled a lot of the traffic unfortunately that was waiting in line and told us that you was running out of donuts to turn back around 🤦🏽‍♀️

Super disappointed that you said you would have donuts till 4 and then you were sold out early. Drove out of our way...

I hope those who didn’t get donuts still donate to Miss Carly’s.

We drove from Wisconsin and waited over two hours in line this morning. Doughnuts were delicious and I am glad you had such an awesome turn out.
