Freeport, Illinois — Two Freeport School District educators will soon transition to different positions of leadership in the district.
After a closed session at its regular meeting on September 18th, the Freeport School District Board of Education voted to appoint Mrs. Pamela Powell as Principal of Empire Elementary School and Mr. Jason Volk as Assistant Principal of Carl Sandburg School.
Mrs. Powell comes to Empire Elementary School from her current position as Assistant Principal at Carl Sandburg School, a role she has held since July 2017. Prior to that, she served as principal at an elementary school in Matteson School District in Richton Park, IL, for several years and as a principal at a PreK-8th grade school in Hopkins Park, IL. She has also had several years of experience as a classroom teacher.
Mrs. Powell holds both a Master of Arts in Education degree and a Master of Arts in School Improvement Leadership from Olivet Nazarene University, as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Pre-Law / Political Science with a minor in History from Norfolk State University.
A meet and greet with Mrs. Powell is set to be held on Sept. 25th from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Empire Elementary School.
Mr. Volk transitions to his new role at Carl Sandburg School from his current position there as Dean of Students, a role he held for two years. Prior to that, he taught third grade at Center Elementary School for eight years.
Mr. Volk holds a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Aurora University, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Coaching from the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater.
Mrs. Powell will succeed Alice Stech, who resigned for personal reasons, and Mr. Volk will succeed Mrs. Powell. Each will begin their new roles on October 9, 2018.
