Highland’s Lifelong Learning Courses Slated To Begin In September

FREEPORT – Highland Community College Lifelong Learning is offering a full schedule of courses this fall. African-American Genealogy      

Location: Freeport Public Library

Registration Deadline: Aug. 29; Class Dates: Sept. 5 and Sept. 12; Class time 6 to 8 p.m.; Fee: $39

Instructor: Terry Feinberg

Participants learn about the variety of potential avenues to trace their African-American ancestors that go beyond the documents and family trees found on Ancestry.com.  The use of DNA tests to determine which African nation, or nations, their ancestors came from will also be briefly addressed in the course.

Metal Detecting Tips for Beginners

Location: HCC/M-213

Registration Deadline: Aug. 29; Class Date: Sept. 5; Class time: 6 to 8 p.m.; Fee: $26

Instructor: Dale Anderson

Are you curious about the increasingly popular hobby of metal detecting? Or do you already have a metal detector, but aren’t sure how to use it? This two-hour workshop will help you get digging for your first targets before you know it. You’ll learn about the functions of the detector, useful accessories, how to find the best hunting spots, and metal detecting etiquette. The instructor will demonstrate how to adjust the settings depending on the type of detecting you are doing and the target you are looking to find. If you have a metal detector, bring it to class.  If you don’t, you’ll have a chance to swing one of the instructor’sdetectors to locate and dig a target.  The class will be held in the large, open grassy area straight west of the YMCA Child Care Center on Highland’s campus.  In the event of inclement weather, the class will be held indoors.

Beginning Watercolor Workshop

Location: 1727 Church Street in Freeport

Registration Deadline: Aug. 30, Class Dates: Sept. 6, 13, 20, 27, Oct. 4, 11, 18, 25; Class time: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.; Fee: $140

Instructor: Roger Goodspeed

Each session consists of a short lecture, a demo, student exercises, creative time, and helpful critiques. Basics include subject selection, composition, color theory, and special watercolor techniques. Hopefully,each student will create at least one “masterpiece” during the workshop.  Since studio time is limited, I encourage you to work at home and bring your paintings to class for review and critique. Class maximum of 10 students to allow individual attention. Printed handouts are provided each session to allow for catch-ups for missed sessions and to provide reference material for future use. A materials list will be supplied by the instructor.

Pics on My Phone — Now What?

Location: HCC/T-161

Got great pictures on your phone, tablet, or digital camera? Now what? Learn how to transfer those images to your computer or laptop, edit them, and share them on social media, or even just through email.

Northern European Cuisine

Location: St. John’s United Church of Christ, Freeport

Registration Deadline: Sept. 4; Class Date: Sept. 11; Class time: 5 to 8 p.m.; Fee: $45

Instructor: Michael Staver

Northern European will include countries such as Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden, Germany and the United Kingdom (UN’s definition of Northern Europe). This area, because of the severe winters, is known for its hearty cuisine, using lots of potatoes and fish. Dishes prepared may include poached salmon with dill sauce, German potato salad, Swedish meatballs, apple desserts, and lentil dishes.  Please bring containers to take food home in.

Death in the White House

Location: HCC/H-208, Freeport

Registration Deadline: Sept. 5; Class Dates: Sept. 12, 19, 26, Oct. 3; Class Time: 7 to 8:30 p.m.; Fee: $75

Instructor: Mark Peterson

This class takes a closer look at the deaths and near deaths of the Presidents that have occurred while they were in office.  It covers the four natural deaths of Harrison, Taylor, Harding, and FDR.  It also covers the four assassinations of Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, and Kennedy.  It also takes a look at the near death of Wilson and near assassination of Reagan.

Introduction to Beekeeping

Location: HCC/H-117, Freeport

Registration Deadline: Sept. 5; Class Dates: Sept. 12, 19, 26, Oct. 3, 10, 17; Class Time: 7 to 8 p.m.; Fee: $42

Instructor: Allen Reed

Allen Reed has been a backyard beekeeper for nine years. Join him as he shares some of the pitfalls and joys of this ancient yet modern craft-art-science-hobby-business. In class, he will discuss the history of beekeeping, the life cycle of the honeybee, and management of hives throughout the year. He will also discuss modern equipment choices, honey extraction, sales, and of course, sample some of the sweet rewards of beekeeping. No equipment or experience needed.

Learn Your Smartphone

Location: Stephenson County Senior Resource Center, Freeport

Registration Deadline: Sept. 5; Class Date: Sept. 12; Class Time: 1 to 3 p.m.; Fee: $25

Learn more about your smartphone. The class will include security, how to use contacts, linking your email and more. Time will be reserved at the end of class to have your questions answered.

Resume Building

Location: Warren Public Library, Warren

Bring the information for your resume (work experience, education, references) and leave with information to complete a resume ready to submit for any job. The first hour learn about quality resumes, the second hour you will be working on your resume.

Starting Out in Astronomy

Location: Doug Firebaugh Observatory, Freeport

Through a mixture of lectures, discussions, and hands-on activities, this course will provide a foundation for those interested in the science and hobby of astronomy and understanding the night sky.

Windows 10

Learn the new features of Windows 10 and the similarities between prior versions of Windows and 10. Bring your Windows 10 laptop to use in class to immediately apply what the instructor is talkingabout.

3D Printing

Location: HCC/T-137, Freeport

Instructor: Jeremy Monigold

This course will introduce students to Additive Manufacturing/3D printing including how 3D printing is being applied across a number of domains, including design, manufacturing, and retailing; special capabilities of 3D printing such as customization, self-assembly, and the ability to print complex objects; and, demonstration of how 3D printers are made and how they work.

Clean, Prep & Eat Fresh Fish

Sociology and Humans

This class will give a better understanding of why humans act the way they do. We will be looking at different social experiments and also conduct our own in the classroom. Discussion and intuitive thinking will be major components of the class.
