Freeport, Illinois — It happened again. Another idiot in Freeport carrying around a gun appears to have gotten into a fight with someone and once again started shooting.
The incident this time happened around 5:30 p.m. Saturday evening near the intersection of Galena and Float Avenue in Freeport, according to reports. Freeport Police said two men were fighting when one of them (the idiot) started shooting.
The result; a 24-year-old bystander was hit by gunfire.
“I always new there would crime scene tape around my house one day”, a Freeport resident stated around 7:00 p.m. Saturday evening. “Nothing like getting off work and finding all the cops in town in front of your house with the street taped off”, they added.
But shootings in Freeport aren’t anything new to the people who live here.
In January of this year a person was taken to the hospital after shots were fired on the 1300 block of South Float Avenue. Another incident happened in the beginning of March, when a Freeport man was shot in the leg in the area of Pine Avenue and Elk Street.
“Most of what happens in Freeport is kept quiet”, one person commented about the incident. They said the “powers that be” want our town to seem like it’s much quieter and crime free than it is. That (they) want to “keep it out of the paper and off the news”.
Regarding the situation another had stated, “This breaks my heart”. “The hometown we rode our bikes in till the street light came on and it was safe to play outside”, they recalled of Freeport.
Another wondered, “what happened to that nice place where I grew up?”
Maybe America has lost its moral compass. Violence is “cool” and when violence, vengeance, lawlessness and revenge is the only world people inhabit, the culture and practice of real-life violence is more difficult to scrutinize, resist and transform.
While adults may buy guns due to a variety of reasons, younger people often buy guns for the power they feel that it gives them. Some carry for protection; others carry it as a status symbol.
Americans do not merely engage in violence; they are also entertained by it. We are living in an increasingly violent society that is losing its value for human life or any form of personal responsibility.
The signs of that, are reports like this.
