Freeport, Illinois — Open for business since way back in 1877, the F.A. Read Center is a Freeport landmark located in the heart of a growing downtown.
This 6,500 commercial property has entrances on both sides of the block (Stephenson and Exchange) and a steady stream of foot traffic flowing to the numerous long standing existing businesses located inside.
The F.A. Read Center is the current location of S&R Dance Studio, Freeport Health Club (the oldest running gym in Freeport) along with Progressive Fighting Concepts, two hair salons, a massage therapist and numerous other retail stores. The current F.A. Read management team has been helping businesses succeed at this location for over 30 years.
According to their website, F.A. Read became a pillar of the community. He helped found Freeport’s first phone company, the Freeport Club, the Parkview Home for the elderly and other businesses and charities. He also donated the land and funds to create Read Park, a 36 acre jewel of Freeport’s award-winning park system.
When Read passed away in 1942 at the age of 89, the store was sold to the Bergner department store chain, but the F.A. Read name stayed. When drastic changes in the retail industry put the store in danger, the F.A. Read Center was created to transform it into a mall in the heart of downtown.
The property is listed at $299,900. MLS #20172169. You can view more property details here.
