Muscatine, Iowa – Here’s some good news. The Muscatine High School in Muscatine, Ia is slated to close its school nursery after 25 years because of the rapid decline of teen pregnancies. The nursery provides day care services so teen parents could remain in school and graduate and was started as part of a pregnancy prevention grant through the Iowa Department of Human Services. Diana Broderson, director of Family Programs at the YMCA and mayor-elect of Muscatine, says closing the nursery is a good thing because a decline in teen pregnancy means that prevention efforts are paying off. However some community health leaders warn that it is premature to reduce such programs.
Teen parents will work with Trinity to find child care after the nursery closes at the end of the 2015-16 school year.
