“In God We Trust” Plaque Soon To Grace Freeport’s City Hall, Too

Freeport, Illinois — July 6, 2017 — The City Council plans to authorize the public display of a plaque on City Hall bearing the official motto of the United States of America, “In God We Trust”

In God We Trust has been an integral part of the American fabric for generations, and that is why it is so vitally important that we don’t gloss over – or worse yet – erase such an important piece of our identity.

In 1956, our U.S. Congress adopted “In God We Trust” as our nation’s motto. And though historians would consider 1956 a relatively recent development, the antecedence of the phrase as our nation’s official motto was penned by Francis Scott Key when he wrote the Star Spangled Banner in 1814.

This motto has received widespread and bipartisan support and is why on November 1, 2011, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution (H.Con.Res.13) and reaffirmed “In God We Trust” as the official motto of the United States of America and encouraged its display throughout America.

On July 15th, 2016, the Stephenson County Board correctly passed a resolution to recognize the 60th anniversary of “In God We Trust” and many believe the City Council should also recognize this motto and display it proudly throughout Freeport.

It is my hope, that with this plaque, we are telling future generations in Freeport, Illinois that we proudly uphold our sacred American heritage– in this case– our nation’s official motto “In God We Trust.”
