Firefighter Suffers Minor Injuries In Thursday Morning Blaze That Destroys Home And Claims Life of Pet

FREEPORT, ILLINOIS — The City of Freeport Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 6:00am this morning for a possible house fire at 802-804 South Locust. Upon arrival, the first unit found heavy fire showing from a 2 story duplex. Firefighters attempted entry into the residence to begin fire attack but had to exit due to heavy fire involvement and unsafe conditions.

An additional shift of firefighters was called in, using 25 firefighters to complete extinguishment in approximately 2 hours.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury, no civilians were injured. Firefighters were able to rescue 2 cats but 1 cat perished in the fire.

The residence is unlivable and Red Cross is assisting the lone resident from the South side of the duplex. The North
side was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

Damage is estimated at $60,000 and the fire is currently under investigation.
