UPDATE: 1:44 p.m. — The Freeport City Fire Department has issued more information regarding this morning’s fire that broke out at Maria’s Pizza on Galena Avenue in Freeport.
Freeport Fire says they were dispatched at 06:44 am to a possible fire behind Maria’s Pizza, 922 W. Galena Avenue. Upon arrival crews found heavy smoke and flames venting out the back side of Maria’s Pizza. Fire Crews forced entry and were able to extinguish the fire quickly. Maria’s Pizza was closed and unoccupied at the time of the fire. Fire damage loss was estimated to be over $200,000. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Freeport, Illinois — An early morning fire broke out at one of Freeport’s favorite local establishments today as citizens reported seeing smoke coming out of Maria’s Pizza just shortly after 6:30 a.m. this morning.
One person stated, “I called 911 a little after 6:30 this morning when I saw the smoke wasn’t sure if it was Maria’s or not but I knew something was on fire.”
Another, “Drove by on the way to Madison and the trucks are gone but a officers vehicle blocks the entrance for obvious reasons. The Windows in front were all blacked out, but mostly to the left. Looks like the main dining area didn’t get it as bad as the smaller section up front to the left of when you walk in.”
First responders arriving this morning say that heavy smoke was seen coming from the roof and the east side of the building. The fire was initially put out according to reports, but then ignited again an hour or so later. One person had commented, “I was told by police dept this morning. Then the fire reignited and they had to go back.”
“It is blocked off a second time smoke started again about an hour ago”, another commented from the scene.
Roads were blocked off as officials worked and no injuries were reported. Maria’s is closed on Monday’s. There is no word on how much damage was done. The cause is still under investigation.
There is no word at this time how long Maria’s may be closed.
