Not feeling too cool here today. When I got to Freeport some 20 years ago, I saw a town that was just full-full-full of potential, but now, two decades into it, I'm really wondering if that potential will ever be worth anything. Some good things have definitely happened (I can think of four really) but far more bad things have happened and, have been let to happen, and the great potential that Freeport has, just doesn't get acted on. There is no reason that Freeport hasn't become the most dynamic and progressive small town in Northern Illinois except for what appears to be a plain old lack of imagination on the part of the City Council, the County Board and what appears to be some damnable and inexplicable entrenchment in some of our local business people. This could, and can be, an exciting and crazy-prosperous place for damn near everyone, but so long as everything is just left to run on what can fairly described as "auto-pilot", the quality of life for almost everyone will continue to decline. Our economy is a cash cow to the corporate retailers, our downtown has a million sq/ft of empty real estate and our young people leave the second they become aware of the reality of living here. I for one am as deeply concerned as I can get, that the right people are never going to do anything about any of this. Again, not feelin' to cool here today. Anyone else? ... See MoreSee Less

"Freeport Illinois really needs" is a city council comprised entirely of aldermen that are accessible, connected and responsive to the needs their respective wards and, directors of community and economic development that do a lot more than they've been doing for the last 50 years and, someone there to make damn sure that they do. A similar situation should also be made to exist at the County Board. ... See MoreSee Less
