Press Release – Shooting Arrest Freeport, IL. – Demario Williams, age 25, arrested on charges related to August 3rd shooting in Freeport. On August 9th, 2017, the Freeport Police Department obtained a Felony arrest warrant for Demario Williams, age 25, of Freeport in connection with an August 3rd shooting in the area of Cottonwood Street and Grove Avenue in Freeport. On August 10th, 2017, at approximately 5:29pm, the Freeport Police Department Gang Unit observed Demario Williams leave a residence in the 500 block of W. Cottonwood Street in Freeport and enter the front passenger seat of a vehicle. The vehicle that Demario Williams entered proceeded to leave the area, and Gang Unit personnel subsequently stopped that vehicle in the area of Main Street and Locust Avenue. After the vehicle was stopped, Demario Williams was taken into custody without incident. The August 3rd shooting incident at Cottonwood Street and Grove Avenue was not a random act of violence, rather it was a continuation of a feud between two local hybrid street gangs that has been continuing and on-going in nature since 2012. The feud between these local hybrid street gangs is the root cause of the majority of the illegal gun violence that has occurred in Freeport since 2012. Illegal gun violence in Freeport will not be tolerated and is a major concern to public safety. The Freeport Police Department is committed to reducing illegal gun violence within our community by deploying our resources to investigate, apprehend, and prosecute those who choose to be involved in illegal gun violence. Additionally, the Freeport Police Department has been and will continue to partner with State and Federal authorities in an effort to apprehend violent offenders. The investigation into the August 3rd shooting is still on-going and additional charges and or additional arrests are possible in the future. Anyone who may have additional information about this case should contact the Freeport Police Department Detective Bureau at 815.235.8226 or Stephenson County Crime Stop at 815.235.STOP (7867).
