Freeport Schools to Honor Veterans Day with Various Programs & Activities

FREEPORT, ILLINOIS – Staff and students at several Freeport School District schools will recognize Veterans Day with various programs and activities next week. Among the schools with activities planned are Blackhawk Elementary, Freeport High, and Carl Sandburg.

Blackhawk Elementary School will host its annual Veterans Day Celebration on November 11 at 2:00p.m. Their program will feature the Freeport High School NJROTC Color Guard and Drill Team, the FHS Drumline, guest soloists, and guest speaker LCDR Barry Boettcher, USN (Ret.), who is the Senior Naval Science Instructor of the FHS NJROTC. Finally, the highlight of the program will be a musical tribute by Blackhawk’s Kindergarten to 4th grade students. Area veterans are invited to attend.

Freeport High School will host its Veterans Day Ceremony on November 12 at 9:30 a.m. Veterans are invited to gather at the Moseley Street entrance at 9:00 a.m. to participate in a hall parade prior to the ceremony. The hall parade will be a walk through of the school in order to give students an opportunity to honor and shake hands with the veterans. The FHS ceremony will feature Georgina Haynes, VetsRoll representatives, and Candy Bunker, 333rd FRG, as guest speakers. Area veterans are invited to attend.

Meanwhile, Carl Sandburg School is accepting donations of new socks, hats, and gloves for distribution to needy veterans through the Stephenson County Veterans Assistance Commission. Donations may be dropped off at that school or sent with CSS students. Delivery to the agency will be made before the winter break.
