At its regular meeting held Tuesday evening at the District Administration Building, the Freeport School District Board of Education:
Approved a motion to support the Boys and Girls Club Academic Enrichment Program. The Boys & Girls Club of Freeport & Stephenson County is applying for a multi-year grant proposal that will expand afterschool programming for middle school and older teenage youth. The grant will also support a mentoring initiative at Carl Sandburg Middle School, which will take place during the school day. Freeport School District’s support is in the form of providing a room for the mentoring initiative at Carl Sandburg, as well as data measurement.
Learned about the plans for K-6 Professional Learning Days set to be held on October 19th and 20th. Teachers need to have the opportunity to work collaboratively as a grade level team to share ideas and practices and to receive ongoing professional learning. Therefore, all regularelementary teachers (K-Gr. 4), as well as Gr. 5-6 ELL, ELA, and Math teachers and some Special Education teachers, will be receiving half a day of professional learning in ELA and Math at the Freeport Public Library (K-4) and Freeport Middle School (5-6). FSD Instructional Coaches will deliver the professional learning with support from the district Curriculum Coordinators. District funding will support substitute teachers for that time. This item was informational only; no action was required by the Board.
Approved the purchase of Rocket Math, a systematic, research-based math fluency program for all students in Grades 1 to 4. Rocket Math is a pencil and paper based program that takes less than 10 minutes per day and becomes part of daily classroom routines. Students begin with an initial
assessment to establish their current level of fluency. The cost of the program is $2,300, to be paid out of the district’s Title I funds.
The public is always invited and encouraged to attend Freeport School District Board of Education meetings. The next scheduled regular meeting will be held Tuesday, October 20th at 7:00 PM at the District Administration Building, located at 501 E. South Street.
