Freeport – At its regular meeting held Tuesday evening at the District Administration Building, the Freeport School District Board of Education:
Congratulated the Freeport High School Speech program on its 75th year. This year, the school’s speech team is the largest in the program’s history and many of its students will be competing to progress to regional, sectional, and state tournaments in the coming weeks. Two students from the program were present at the meeting to perform speeches that they are competing with this season.
Learned about a new effort by the district’s two middle schools to provide further academic support to students falling in the “approaching expectations” category on the 2015 PARCC assessment. The middle schools are implementing an 8-week academic support program on Saturday mornings for these students, which will provide another layer of support to foster student success by giving students additional time to work on targeted skills in ELA and Math.
Adopted a motion regarding the a5 community branding proposal agreeing that it is important to promote Freeport in the area for the future, but that the school district cannot redirect any funds that are already slated for the education of our students for the foreseeable future.
Approved the proposed 2016-2017 school year calendar. The calendar is now available for viewing at www.fsd145.org.
Approved a new credit recovery opportunity for Freeport High School freshmen. This is an opportunity for freshman students who have failed their first semester of English (and sometimes Math) at FHS. Selected students would be given the opportunity to immediately make up lost credit through the use of the Edgenuity licenses already purchased for the school through the Regional Office of Education. This allows those freshman students an opportunity to get back “on track” second semester without having to make up the credit in summer school. This credit recovery opportunity would be considered an extension of the after school tutoring program already in place and involves no additional cost to the district.
The public is always invited and encouraged to attend Freeport School District Board of Education meetings. The next scheduled regular meeting will be held Tuesday, February 2nd at 7:00 PM at the District Administration Building, located at 501 E. South Street.
