A courtroom rivalry finds its way into the household when prosecuting lawyer Adam Bonner (Spencer Tracy) faces off against his wife, Amanda (Katharine Hepburn), who happens to be a defense attorney.  Working on opposite sides of a case where a women has shot her cheating husband, Adam and Amanda are both determined to win and their home becomes the setting for comical showdowns with neither spouse willing to relent.

A boarding house for female theater actresses gets a new arrival in the form of Terry Randall (Katharine Hepburn) an upper-class woman pursuing her dreams against her wealthy father’s wishes.  At first her status makes her unpopular with the other boarders, particularly Jean (Ginger Rogers).  As Terry becomes better acquainted with the other girls and their shared ambitions, rivalry – both professional and romantic – explodes among them.

After a religious spinster’s (Katharine Hepburn) missionary brother is killed in WWI Africa, a dissolute steamer captain (Humphrey Bogart) offers her safe passage.  She’s not satisfied so she persuades him to destroy a German gunboat.  The two spend most of their time fighting with each other rather than the Germans.  The trip along the river leads to love.

Cantankerous retiree Norman Thayer (Henry Fonda) and his conciliatory wife, Ethel (Hepburn) spend summers at their New England vacation home on the shores of idyllic Golden Pond. This year their adult daughter, Chelsea (Jane Fonda), visits with her new fiancée and his teenage son, Billy on their way to Europe.  After leaving Billy behind to bond with Norman, Chelsea returns, attempting to repair long-standing differences with her father before it’s too late.

All films are $6 each admission.

The festival is held at the Lindo Theatre, 115 South Chicago Avenue, Freeport, IL

Aug. 19 at 5 p.m. at Winneshiek Players — “Katharine Hepburn: On the Actor’s Stage” starring Becky Connors–tickets at the door / reception follows;

The “Where’s Spence?” Contest

Beginning on August 2nd and running until August 17th, the Spencer Tracy Film Festival Facebook page and Today in the Port Facebook page will periodically post images of a cutout of Spencer Tracy poses in various locations in Freeport.

You can enter the contest by doing two (2) things with each image posted.

1) In the comment section enter your guess as to where in Freeport the photo was taken; and

2) “share” the posted image on your Facebook page. Correct answers coupled with “shares” will be entered into a drawing to win two (2) tickets to each of the four films being screened in this year’s Spencer Tracy Film Festival.

Deadline for all entries is midnight, Central Daylight Savings Time on August 17, 2016.

Only one entry per person per image. Five chances to enter. Join the fun and tell us “Where’s Spence?”
