Christmas Memories In Room 228 Gives Entertainment, Scholarships and Food

Freeport, Illinois – The holiday spirit is alive and well in Freeport Illinois this holiday season and to celebrate FHS Thespians are proud to host Christmas Memories, a collection of humorous and heartwarming songs and stories.  Guests should bring food donations for the Freeport Area Church Cooperative, which needs plenty of food to keep up with our community’s need for non-perishable food items.

Tim Connors is the Grinch Who Stole Christmas!

Directors Becky and Tim Connors describe Christmas Memories as “our homemade Christmas card for the community.  It’s been great working with other teachers in FSD145 to make this show.  Each cast member brings his or her unique talents to make it a delightful performance.”  For the third time, Christmas Memories is presented by Freeport High School Thespians at Freeport High School, and ticket sales will support college scholarships for those students.

LaFrancine Baker; Jody and Gary Brubaker; Tim, Becky, and Henry Connors; Livia Dinderman; Bill Petersen; Derek Simons; and Laura Stocker make up the cast.  Robert Winter is the technical director.

The stories include traditional favorites such as A Visit from St. Nicholas by Clement C. Moore and How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss.  This year’s show features a new retelling O. Henry’s classic The Gift of the Magi, the heartwarming Russian folk tale Baboushka, and poems by Edgar Allen Poe and Shel Silverstein.  Freeport native Matt Bruehler wrote Chanukah Light, a delightful inter-generational story.  Newer stories like Santa Knows and How Santa Got His Job will tickle the audience’s funny bone.  Interpretations of editorial cartoons are interspersed with trombone Christmas carols for a unique perspective on yuletide traditions.

Music is an important part of the Christmas Memories joy.  The cast will sing a variety of holiday tunes from traditional carols like O Come All Ye Faithful and It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, to the haunting melodies of The Snow Lay on the Ground and Go Tell It on the Mountain, to standards like Boogie Woogie Santa Claus, Winter Wonderland, and I’ll Be Home for Christmas, to contemporary songs like Holly Jolly Christmas and Here Comes Santa Claus. Other songs include John Denver’s The Peace of Christmastime and We Wish You a Merry Christmas.  In addition to vocals, the program features piano, guitar, flute, and trombone.  It’s the perfect way to start your holiday season.
