Freeport, Illinois – Freeport High School Theatre Department proudly presents Disney’s The Little Mermaid in the Jeannette Lloyd Theatre Thursday through Saturday, November 10, 11 and 12. Each night has a 7:30 p.m. performance, and there is also a matinee at 2 p.m. Saturday. Directed by Tim Connors, this magical musical is the second Disney show presented by Freeport High School. Last year’s Beauty and the Beast was a smashing success.
Connors, director of theatre at Freeport High School, remarks, “This stage musical includes all the favorite showstoppers from the Disney movie, but it also features new songs that highlight the delightful characters in the show.” Sebastian the crab sings “Under the Sea,” and Ariel the mermaid sings “Part of Your World,” as in the film, but new songs include Scuttle’s “Positoovity” and Flounder’s “She’s in Love.” It is truly an ensemble show, with some smaller roles such as the sisters/princesses taking the lead in featured scenes. The stage (designed by Bob Winter) offers impressive sets, including a ship, the skeleton of a whale, giant seashells, and more. Creating costumes for mermaids and sea creatures has been a delightful challenge for costumer Kathleen Williams.
Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney’s The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award-winning Alan Menken, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs, including “Kiss the Girl,” and “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” and “Le Poisson.” Ariel, King Triton’s youngest daughter, falls in love with a human and bargains with Ursula, the evil sea witch, to trade her tail for legs. Charming characters like Sebastian the crab, Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull, Louis the Chef, and Prince Eric bring the story to life.
Derek Simons is the show’s vocal director; Bob Winter is the technical director; Bill Petersen is the orchestral director; Sarah Long is the choreographer; Kathleen Williams is the costumer; and Kim Meier is sound designer.
Featured performers include Bryn Schiffman as Ariel, Jhavian Dixon as Sebastian, Garrett McDonald as King Triton, Phylinese Brooks as Ursula the Sea Witch, Henry Connors as Prince Eric, Kya Eckert as Flounder, Dan Rials as Scuttle, Jacob Folowell as Grimsby/Chef Louis, Erin Schrader as Flotsam, and Katelynn McIlwain as Jetsom.
