Freeport’s Christmas Card Opens This Thursday at 7:30 in FHS Room 228

Freeport, Illinois — Freeport’s Christmas Card opens this Thursday, November 30, at 7:30 in Freeport High School room 228.  In its nineteenth year, Christmas Memories salutes traditional stories and songs of the season.  It also highlights new and original holiday works by local writers.

Freeporter Gary Brubaker has composed a delightful song, “The Merriest, Magical, Miracle Time of Year.”  Full of tongue-twisters and hilarious lists, the song is sung by Gary Brubaker and Henry Connors.  Former Freeporter Matt Bruehler has written a satirical look at Christmas songs called “A Christmas Lyrical,” which Jody and Gary Brubaker perform delightfully.

Other musical highlights include Laura Stocker singing “The Man with the Bag,”  Derek Simons performing “Sleigh Ride,” Jody Brubaker singing “We Need a Little Christmas,” Cecelie Eiler singing “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” and Tim Connors singing John Denver’s “A Christmas Wish.”  Musical numbers also highlight flutes, violin, guitar, and piano.

While some of the stories in Christmas Memories are performed almost every years, such as “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” other stories are new to the stage.    Latkes, Latkes, Good to Eat  by Naomi Howland is a delightful folk tale about four siblings and a magic frying pan.  Christmas Day in the Morning by Pearl S. Buck, first published in 1955, is a timeless story about a boy’s gift of love for his father.  In A Wish to be a Christmas Tree, author Colleen Monroe shares the charming tale of an overgrown pine always being passed by for Christmas.  Stephen Krensky’s hilarious How Santa Got His Job explains just how Santa started working with a red suit, reindeer, elves, and toys.

Art instructor Jeannie Eiler has created beautiful banners and other decorations for the stage.  Her hand-cut snowflakes and banners make the stage festive.

Tickets cost just $5 plus a non-perishable food donation for the Freeport Area Church Cooperative.  To purchase tickets, call the Freeport High School business office at 232-0428.
