Freeport High School to Host Student Career Fair in Preparation for Academy Transition

FREEPORT, ILLINOIS — As Freeport High School looks toward its transition to an academy model in Fall 2020, the school is preparing to host a unique opportunity next week for its students to explore a variety of career fields. The school will hold its first “Your Future, Your Choice” career fair on Tuesday, November 26, 2019, from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Freeport High School.

The career fair will feature almost 150 booths at which area employers, colleges, and military representatives will speak with FHS students about their field and demonstrate aspects of their job through hands-on activities. In all, around 100 careers are expected to be represented, including those in public services, the armed forces, manufacturing, the trades, finance, healthcare, communications, law, agriculture, and more.

The career fair will help students determine what academy they’re interested in participating in when the school transitions to an academy model in Fall 2020.

Academies are small learning communities that provide real-world experiences with local businesses and professionals, linking school work and the workplace. Regular course work, including math, language arts, science, and history, will be presented within the context of each academy’s focus. By creating engaging, hands-on, relevant learning opportunities, developing small learning communities, and connecting with local businesses, post-secondary institutions, and organizations, the academy model aims to ensure students graduate with a plan for a successful future.
