Freeport School District Board of Education Meeting Highlights

Freeport, Illinois — At its regular meeting held on the evening of Tuesday, February 20th, the Freeport School District Board of Education recognized the FHS Chess Team, Speech Team, Girls Bowling Team, and Boys Wrestling Team for their recent achievements at the regional, sectional, and state levels.

The Board also recognized FHS Teacher and Speech Coach Tim Connors, who has been recognized by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) with its Outstanding Speech, Debate and Theatre Educator Award.

The FHS National Honor Society also shared a presentation with the Board about its activities.

In addition the Board:

● Received a mid-year update on the progress of the district’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

This school year, the department’s efforts have been focused on several initiatives: implementation of the Bridges math curriculum in Grades K-5, implementation of College Preparatory Mathematics in Grades 6-12, implementation of the Schoolwide reading curriculum in Grades K-8, assessment, the Kindergarten Individual Development Survey, 21st century teaching and learning, and MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support).

Other ongoing efforts include curriculum reviews in the areas of 9-12 ELA, 6-12 Social Studies, 6-12 Science, K-12 Art, and K-12 World Languages.

The department continues to work to develop an aligned Standards Based Instructional System in an effort to increase academic achievement for all students.

● Received an update on first semester discipline and the implementation of PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports) in all FSD schools.

● Approved a revised version of the previously approved 2018-2019 school year calendar which includes the addition of School Improvement Days.
