Ignite Your Morning – Say what you mean and mean what you say

When I was little my mom said a couple things to us kids almost incessantly. Things like “knock it off or I’m going to bump your heads together” or “what goes around comes around.”

Today I want to highlight one of those phrases that were said so often in my childhood, that even though my mom has long since met Jesus after a short battle with pancreatic cancer, her words stick with me to this day. That word is “say what you mean and mean what you say.” That’s a good word mom, thanks for that.

Words have a LOT of power!  Friendship is started with words, relationships are both started and ended with words, stories are told with words, divorces are often caused by words, healing can begin with the words “I’m sorry.”  Words matter a great deal, which is why one of my personal core values, as well as our church’s, is that we will always build up and never tear down.

Let’s follow that thought with this statement: You are a winner! You are created to be a champion. You were literally created and given the power to overcome! And how do champions/winners speak? How about “I won’t quit,” “I won’t back down.” Speaking life isn’t always easy, but who said being a champion doesn’t take dedication and intentionality?

Here are a few questions for you:

  1. What would my life look like if I never spoke another negative word this year?
  2. What would happen if my words started to match my identity as a winner/an overcomer?
  3. How would your life be different? Your marriage? Your relationship with your children, your coworkers?
