FREEPORT, ILLINOIS — The public is invited to a celebration of the completion of the Walnut Acres’ Foundation Solar Field Thursday, December 5, 2019 from 2:00 to 7:00 PM at the Walnut Acres Nursing Center, 2946 S. Walnut Road, Freeport. The open house begins with a ribbon-cutting hosted by the Freeport Chamber of Commerce in the lobby at 2:00 pm.
The Walnut Acres’ Foundation Field solar project will produce clean, renewable solar power for the Walnut Acres Nursing Center. Planned, funded and executed by the Stephenson Nursing Center Foundation, the field is expected to produce approximately 68% of the Nursing Center’s electricity needs.
Formerly known as the Stephenson Nursing Center, Walnut Acres is a not-for-profit, long-term care facility owned and operated by the people of Stephenson County since 1854.
“During my tenure, the Stephenson Nursing Center Foundation has incorporated many major improvements to our Walnut Acre facility. These improvements include significant energy and energy efficiency upgrades. A solar field has been constructed along with energy-efficient windows being put in and a new emergency generator is expected to come online in February,” states County Board Chair, William Hadley. “Additionally, the enjoyment of the facility by our residents has been greatly enhanced by the Foundation’s financial support in providing new beds and bedding, curtains, televisions, and hallway finishes.”
Founded in 2002, the Stephenson Nursing Center Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) whose primary mission is to enhance the operations of Walnut Acres.
The event will be followed by light refreshments and an open house of the recently upgraded Walnut Acre Nursing Center facility. The first 200 attendees who register, over 60 years of age will receive a gift bag containing a $10 cash thank-you for attending.
