Freeport, Illinois — Illinois State Representative Brian W. Stewart (R-Freeport) announced last week that he will be seeking election to the Illinois State Senate in 2018. Stewart intends to replace 45th Illinois Senate District State Senator Tim Bivins (R-Dixon) who announced earlier this year that he will not be seeking reelection to the Illinois General Assembly.
With his announcement, Stewart says he will not seek reelection as the 89th Illinois House District Representative—a seat he has held since 2013.
“It has been truly an honor to serve and to represent the people of northwest Illinois as their state representative and an honor to serve alongside Senator Bivins for the past four years,” said the 89th House District representative. “Senator Bivins has been a friend and a mentor to me and I know I have some pretty big shoes to fill in the state senate should I be elected.”
Much of Stewart’s legislative work over the past five years has been focused on putting Illinois in a regulatory and financial position to create living wage agricultural and manufacturing jobs that will strengthen Illinois’ ailing economy.
“Illinois’ future depends on our ability to grow the state’s economy,” said Stewart. “We must develop the right policies that create economic, business, and employment opportunities in Illinois and change those policies that make our state uncompetitive in the Midwest.”
As a representative from a district that borders both Iowa and Wisconsin, Stewart said he is particularly interested in continuing his work on legislation that will make Illinois more competitive in job and business retention.
Stewart became of a member of the Illinois General Assembly in 2013 when he replaced State Representative Jim Sacia upon the former representative’s retirement. Stewart was elected to the Illinois House in 2014 and 2016. He currently serves on the Illinois House Committees on Agriculture and Conservation; Appropriations–Public Safety; Executive; Judiciary – Criminal (Republican Spokesman); Labor & Commerce; Revenue & Finance; Restorative Justice (Republican Spokesman) and Veteran’s Affairs.
Stewart is the CEO of Stewart & Associates Inc., and 20 other businesses and is a major employer in northwest Illinois that employs almost 500 workers. He is a lifelong Freeport area resident and attended Freeport High School, is a United States Army Veteran, a retired Sergeant from the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Department, and a member of the Freeport Noon Rotary, AMVETS Post 32 and the Stephenson County Farm Bureau.
The former Freeport City Alderman and Freeport Township Trustee, is also a past chairman of the Northwest Illinois Criminal Justice Commission, United Way of Northwest Illinois, Freeport Area Chamber of Commerce, Northwest Illinois Development Alliance, Stephenson County ETSB (911 Board) and the Stephenson County Republican Central Committee. Stewart was also the charter president of Stephenson County Employees—UAW Local 2261.
The 45th Illinois Senate District includes parts of Carroll, DeKalb, Jo Daviess, LaSalle, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson, Whiteside and Winnebago Counties.
