Freeport, Illinois — Most of you are celebrating Labor Day weekend with the official holiday on Monday with a day off work and it is also commonly viewed as the official farewell to summer. The holiday is a national holiday set aside to pay tribute to working men and women. I hope that everyone is enjoying the holiday weekend. All non-emergency City offices will be closed on Monday in observance of the holiday. Due to the holiday our Council meeting will be held Tuesday at 6 PM.
I’d like to recognize the owners of Sanitary Cleaners for their resilience and great customer service after their recent building fire. While some may have just thrown their hands in the air and walked away they immediately put together a plan to get items that their customers had in their building recleaned and opened up for business again in an adjacent building. While I’m sure their heads were overwhelmed with all that they had to deal with they opened their hearts and said we will go on and did this all with such focus on serving their customers. Thank
you, Sanitary Cleaners owners Roger Hulsebus, Jeff Gehlsen and Wendell Klosa, for that!
I recently was a part of a meeting that involved some issues that a neighborhood in Freeport was experiencing. We met with a group of 30 neighbors, their alderman, city manager and Public Works director. I have to say how refreshing it was to meet with them and hear how they were working together in the true sense of a neighborhood to
make things better in their area. My hope is that attitude will reach across the city and that more areas will begin to work together for a common goal of betterment. Thank you to them for reminding me how it should be!
One can’t move forward in the positive if the foundation is negative. These are two examples of how positive attitudes result in good ways.
We had some very good news regarding sales of homes in Freeport. The stats provided to us showed there were 36 homes closed in July that were priced from $10,000 to $260,000 with the average sale price being $83,734. I’d like to point out too that our residency requirement for department heads has resulted in the purchase of five homes by
department heads that moved their families to Freeport. I’m happy to say that we have contributed to the increase in home sales in Freeport!

We are going to be starting conversations regarding the general election on November 8, 2018 when the City Council will be asking you to vote on whether the City Treasurer position should be removed resulting in a savings to the City or if it should continue to be an elected position. Since the departure of our treasurer due to her retirement, the duties she performed have been assumed by the finance director. A yes vote on this referendum will mean the position will be abolished and be transferred to a hired individual in the finance department. This will ensure that individual has financial and accounting background. A no vote means you want to keep the process of selection of treasurer the same, meaning it would remain as an elected official.
We are going to offer something new; “Meet with the Mayor” opportunities in the coming months. The first event will be held on Thursday, September 27th from 8 AM – 9 AM and will be held at Higher Grounds Specialty Coffee and Tea at 1709 S. West Avenue. Citizens are invited to stop in to discuss municipal issues and concerns. We will have first come first served 5-minute individual conversations. You will sign up when you arrive. We will see how this goes and continue accordingly.
Freeport is a great place to live, work and play. Thank you for being a part of it!
