Orangeville Man Barricades Himself In Home After Allegedly Threatening To Shoot Ex-Wife And Her Dog

On Sunday August 19, 2018 at 7:54 AM the Stephenson County Sheriffs Office responded to a 911 call of a domestic dispute involving threats with a firearm from a female at 1190 Rock Grove Road, Orangeville IL.

A Deputy met with the female inside the home and the female caller advised she had been assaulted by her ex-husband and that he displayed a handgun threatening to shoot her and her dog. The suspect was identified as Jay R Vandervalk. The Deputy verbally summoned the suspect but received no response. The victim was taken to safety while the exterior perimeter of the home was secured. The victim advised that the suspect also lived at the home and had numerous firearms inside. The on scene Supervisor requested a response from the Stephenson County Sheriffs Office Emergency Response Team and Tactical Emergency Medical Support. The suspect’s refusal to communicate and the knowledge that numerous firearms were available to him led to the evacuation of vulnerable residences for public safety and a secure perimeter was maintained. Contact was established with the suspect however the suspect refused to come out to Law Enforcement. The suspect’s son arrived at 3:30 PM and assisted in the surrender of the suspect at 3:52PM.

Jay R Vandervalk was taken into custody for Domestic Battery, Aggravated Unlawful Restraint, and Aggravated Assault.

The Stephenson County Sheriffs Office acknowledges the assistance of the following agencies. Illinois State Police District 16, Freeport Police Department and Freeport Police Emergency Response Team, Ogle County Sheriffs Office, Orangeville Police Department, ILEAS support from Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, Byron Police Department, Stockton Police Department, Warren Police Department, Winnebago Police Department, Pecatonica Police Department, Mercy Health Emergency Services, Leamon’s Ambulance, Star Ambulance, Commonwealth Edison and the Village of Winslow.


UPDATE: 4:30 p.m. Sunday – Standoff in Orangeville is reportedly over with suspect said to be in custody. Sheriff David Snyders told Eyewitness News that a man forced his way into his ex-wife’s home and threatened to shoot her and the family dog. The incident happened around 8:00 a.m.


Orangeville, Illinois — At around 10:30 this morning in Orangeville, Illinois reports began coming in of a possible hostage situation in or around Rock Grove Road.

Numerous reports stated there were county cops looking for an address earlier this morning and that an unmarked state patrol had also been seen. At 10:42 a.m. one Orangeville resident was coming home from church when they noticed the entrance to their subdivision on Rock Grove Road was blocked off.

“Found out when I was coming home from church. Was taking the Rock Grove Road entrance to the subdivision to drop my cousin off then head home. I turned on Johnson Street and ended up taking the Church street entrance into the subdivision. It is blocked at the end of my street too.”

At 11:04 a.m. Freeport Scanner II reported that the Stephenson County Sheriff was currently handling a barricade and possible Hostage situation in Orangeville. They reported a Tactical Unit was Deployed.

One Orangeville resident stated at around 11:08 this morning they had confirmed with law enforcement that it is a guy (man presumably) barricaded in his home with a shotgun on Rock Grove Road.

At 11:30 a.m. another resident stated the situation was two houses down from them. “Looks like it might be wrapping up soon. I have seen a few police leave”, they said.

No additional information is available at this time.
