Freeport High School Theatre Department Presents ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’

Freeport, Illinois — Freeport High School Theatre Department proudly announces its final show of the season: Arsenic and Old Lace May 10, 11, and 12, at the Jeannette Lloyd Theatre. Tickets are now on sale at the FHS Business Office at $7 each.

Popularized by the Frank Capra film starring Cary Grant, this dark comedy originally opened on Broadway in 1941 when The New York Times reported that it was “so funny that none of us will ever forget it.” Arsenic and Old Lace is a farcical black comedy revolving around the Brewster family, descended from the Mayflower, but now composed of sociopaths and murderers.

The Brewster Family has plenty of skeletons in their closets…and window seat, and basement. The story revolves around two kindly, eccentric, spinster sisters and their nephew, a theatre critic who’s marrying the minister’s daughter from next door. Add one nephew who thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt and a long-lost nephew who looks like Boris Karloff, and you’ve got a hit on your hands!

Director Tim Connors describes the show: “It’s such an entertaining collection of kooky characters, with a hilarious, fast-paced plot. We’re having a great time rehearsing this classic comedy.” Kathleen Williams, who has served as costume designer of all FHS shows for many years, is costuming her last show at Freeport High School. The Theatre Department would like to thank Kathleen for all her talent, hard work, and compassion for students that have helped to make so many great shows. Tech director Robert Winter is building a gorgeous Victorian interior.

The cast features many students whom audience members may remember from last fall’s Guys and Dolls at Freeport High School: Senior Daniel Rials (last seen as Nathan Detroit) as Mortimer; Senior Kya Eckert (last seen as Adelaide) as Aunt Abby Brewster; Senior Garrett McDonald (last seen as Sky Masterson) as Teddy Brewster; and Junior Henry Connors (last seen as Nicely Nicely Johnson) as Jonathan Brewster. Other lead roles feature Senior Elizabeth Julius as Aunt Martha Brewster, Senior Keagen Mazzarisi as Dr. Einstein, Senior Ella Redmore as Elaine Harper, and Senior Sara Heiden as Miss Witherspoon. Additional cast members include Michael Watson, Rowan Thornton, Veronica Homan, Jeffrey Apodaca, Colton Thies, and Alexander Hendrickson.
