Freeport, Illinois — Fall is such a wonderful time of the year. It is also a time when leaves in our yards begin to collect. This year the Public Works Department will pick up leaves beginning October 15, 2018, and will continue through the week of November 26, 2018.
City of Freeport Public Works Department will begin the community-wide curb-side leaf pick up beginning Monday, October 15, 2018. The City’s leaf pick-up program offers curb-side vacuuming of leaves street by street on a rotation basis throughout the City. Leaf pickup will end on Sunday, November 25th and weather permitting the city will do one final round through the week of November 26, 2018.
Following are resident guidelines for leaf pickup:
- Leaves must be placed in a continuous row at the curb line.
- Only leaves are accepted. No grass clippings, yard waste, sticks, brush, or trash are to be placed in the leaf pile. (These items can damage the collection equipment.) If such waste is placed curbside, city crews will refuse collection.
- Please do not park vehicles on or immediately next to a leaf pile.
- Please do not cover the storm sewer grate with leaves.
Director of Public Works, Dennis Carr noted that leaf pickup by city crews is a labor-intensive task because it involves the collection and disposal of more than 100 tons of leaves on every street in Freeport. Leaf pick-up involves most of the department’s resources during this 6-week period. The city asks residents to bear with them because they can only collect leaves one block at a time.
If residents have questions about collection days, they are encouraged to call the Public Works Department at (815) 235-8210. Leaf pickup information will also be posted on the City’s website at cityoffreeport.org.
