FREEPORT — Alex Jansen of Freeport, a student in the Mass Communication program at Highland Community College, was recognized at the fourth annual Friends of the Fine Arts (FoFA) student scholarship recognition reception on Friday, May 13 at Fieldstone Inn in Freeport.
During the reception, those in attendance were able to view some of Jansen’s work including excerpts from a video he produced that was awarded a first prize in the Reel Illinois Community College film competition from the Illinois Community College Trustees Association (ICCTA) in March.
Jansen said he was humbled to receive the $1,000 scholarship from The Friends of the Fine Arts. Jim Yeager, his Mass Communication instructor, said, “Alex is a great kid, a student worker, and has an insane work ethic, striving to be better.”
Alex replied, “I am totally surprised by this and very humbled,” Jansen said. “I like creating and telling stories. It’s all about getting people’s message out there.”
Chris Kuberski, executive vice-president of Highland, said, “The Friends of the Fine Arts is intended to build on the strong tradition of the fine arts at Highland and the surrounding communities. FoFA members support the fine arts through their financial contribution and attendance at fine arts events. We have added some membership perks that we hope will entice others to join FoFA and express our gratitude for their continued support.”
