Today in history: March 30, 1867

U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward and Russian minister Eduard de Stoeckl agreed upon a treaty in which the United State would purchase Alaska from Russia.

At $7.2 million dollars (roughly 2 cents per acre) the purchase was labeled "Seward's Folly", "Seward's Icebox" and President Andrew Johnson's "polar bear garden" by the press and Congress.

The treaty was ratified by a 1 vote margin in the U.S. Senate on April 9, 1867.
