Freeport, Illinois – Highland Community College and United Way have partnered together to present a workshop for those interested in childcare.
The availability of childcare in our area is more than just a concern for parents. Having access to quality and affordable childcare can also be a barrier to employment. Earlier this year, the United Way of Northwest Illinois, in cooperation with Highland Community College and other partners, evaluated the results from a workforce barrier survey completed by over 500 individuals. In addition to the survey, this same group hosted a workforce summit with area employers to better understand their challenges of recruiting and obtaining a qualified workforce.
In response to these efforts, the limited number of childcare options (specifically for 2nd, 3rd, and swing shift workers) was brought to our attention by both employees seeking work and employers.
In response to this information, Highland Community College is hosting an informational session for individuals or groups interested in starting a childcare business. The session details are listed below. Presenting will be staff member from the YWCA who can address licensing, credentialing, childcare subsidies, and other relevant information. This program is open to the public and all levels of interest are encouraged to attend.
