Freeport, Illinois — City of Freeport officials are projecting that demolition of 17 W. Stephenson will begin on January 23, 2017, with hand demolition work beginning at the rear (south) end of the building.
After this work is completed, demolition utilizing heavy equipment will proceed from the front (north) end of the building.
To facilitate the process, the following closures of parking lanes and driving lanes are scheduled:
* Van Buren St. (Main to Stephenson) January 23rd – January 27th – East parking lane closed. (shown below)
* W. Stephenson St. (Chicago to Van Buren): January 25th – January 27th – South driving lane and south parking lanes closed. (shown below)
Modifications to this schedule will be made as necessary to facilitate demolition, and alley access will be restricted during this time period as well.
The building’s stability became an issue in April 2016 when city officials condemned it due to the failure of a load bearing beam, which was the result of unpermitted work that endangered the building. City officials instituted legal proceedings to force repair or demolition.
The court ordered the demolition of the building on December 20, 2016, and since that time city officials have worked with contractors to stabilize the adjacent west building, and to ensure that utility services to 17 W. Stephenson have been disconnected.
