Illinois State Police Vehicle Involved In Death of Freeport Man

East Peoria —  An Illinois State Police vehicle claimed the life of a Freeport man on Illinois Route 116 early Saturday morning. The man who was killed was identified by the Tazewell County Coroner’s Office as Jarett J. Simons, 44, of Freeport, Illinois.

According to the Illinois State Police, the trooper was driving in the left lane on Route 116, known as North Main Street, when he struck Simons, who was walking in the middle of the highway. The trooper, whose name wasn’t released, did not have time to react before striking Simons, the release said. The accident occurred about 4:20 a.m.

This is very sad news for friends and family. We met someone who knew Jarett at Cruise Night last night in Freeport, Illinois who told us, “when I heard the news, it just couldn’t believe it”. “Jarett used to babysit me when I was young”, adding, “he’s a part of my whole life“.

Our condolences go out to all those who knew Jarett.
