November 3, 2015 Board of Education Meeting Highlights

Freeport – At its regular meeting held Tuesday evening at the District Administration Building, the Freeport School District Board of Education:

Discussed various levy adoption scenarios in preparation of final approval of the levy in December. Mr. McDermott, FSD Asst. Supt. of Business & Finance, presented four scenarios: 1) levying to CPI only, 2) levying to no $ increase, 3) levying to no rate increase, and 4) ballooning to levy at a 4.99% rate increase. Mr. McDermott’s recommendation was to avoid scenarios 3, as it would cause a loss of funds, and 4, as it is irresponsible levying. In light of a potential freeze of the 2016 and 2017 levies to this year’s rate, he recommended adopting scenario 1: a CPI only levy. The Board will vote to set the levy at its December regular meeting.

Approved the request from the Boys and Girls Club for a $25,000 grant to continue providing programming during the school year and throughout the summer to more than 300 youth in the Freeport School District. The Boys and Girls Club’s after school and summer programs offer academic support, structured activities, supervised recreation, and parental involvement while teaching students about responsibility and other important life skills.

Approved the Memorandum of Understanding between Freeport School District and the Regional Office of Education for the Alternative Learning Opportunities Program for the 2015-2016 school year. This shared services agreement details each party’s responsibilities in the operation of the Freeport Alternative High School.

Approved the implementation of a new electronic flyer distribution system called Peachjar. By sending eflyers directly to parents by email and automatically posting them for viewing online, this system will provide approved community flyers and school-specific information to parents in a more direct, quick, and organized manner than the process currently used. The service will launch in Freeport schools in December and is provided to the district at no cost. Community organizations that charge user fees will pay $12.50-$25.00 per school per flyer.

The public is always invited and encouraged to attend Freeport School District Board of Education meetings. The next scheduled regular meeting will be held Tuesday, November 17th at 7:00 PM at the District Administration Building, located at 501 E. South Street.
